A Proposal Story

In honor of the sixth anniversary of our engagement, I thought it would be fun to rehash the details of that day!

It all started on a sunny Saturday morning...

Matthew and I had been dating for exactly two months and two days.  During that time, we had established a usual weekend routine.  He would come over by 9:00 am most Saturday mornings, and then we would decide how to spend our day.  That day was a little different.  Matthew called to say he had a few errands to run, but then he would be over by late morning.

No big deal, I thought.  So I took my shower, dressed in some comfy "at-home" style clothes and put on a little-bit of make-up.  Wet hair went up into a clip.

Matthew got to my condo between 10:00 and 11:00 am, and after the usual greetings, we settled down on the couch to chat.

Let me pause to relay some critical information.  Two weeks earlier, we had a discussion about our relationship and decided that things definitely looked like they were moving toward marriage.  By the following week, we had firmly decided that we were going to get married, but that an official engagement would have to wait.  First, Matthew needed time to get the money together for a ring.  Second, Matthew's sister was getting married in August, and we didn't want to upstage her right before her wedding.  So needless to say, I was not expecting a proposal anytime soon.

Ok - back to the conversation on the couch.  The first thing that struck me as kind of odd was that he was sitting at the opposite end of the couch.  As a new couple still, we always sat next to each other and held hands or cuddled.  So that was kind of weird...

Then the conversation got really serious.  Matthew started going through all the conversations we'd had leading up to dating, the decision to marry and the plans we had made thus far.

Sirens and red-flashing lights were going off in my head.  My stomach was in knots and my chest was getting tight.  Oh no, I thought, he's changed his mind. He thinks this is all a mistake, and he's getting ready to break up with me and call the whole thing off.

So while I'm panicking internally, Matthew all of the sudden stands up and walks over in front of me.  Before I can even process that, he's down on one knee with a ring in his hand.

"Sarah Carroll, will you marry me?"

Totally confused, I said yes, hugged him, kissed him cried.  Then he told me all about how this unplanned proposal came about that morning.  Long story short, the Holy Spirit had been at work in his house that morning.  And after a conversation with his mom, prayer and confirmation that the Lord wanted him to move forward TODAY, he began putting the proposal in motion.  Since he hadn't had time to save up for a ring yet, his mom offered a sterling band that has been his grandmother's.  His mom had also gotten us a gift certificate to a local restaurant so we could celebrate that night.

So we were all happy and glowing and suddenly I remembered how I looked.  I couldn't go out in public as a newly engaged person with wet hair and raccoon eyes!

So I left my slightly befuddled, brand-new fiancé in the living room while I made a mad dash to dry my hair and fix my make-up.
